Lightning Strikes Louis Vuitton: Shocking Crossover Between Final Fantasy and High-End Fashion

They say lightning never strikes the same place twice, yet Lightning, the main heroine from the Final Fantasy XIII installment of a popular video game, has electrified the world and struck numerous times, spawning a number of sequels, spin-offs, and appearances in other media. That same wild success has now manifested in a new ad-campaign in collaboration with world-renowned fashion brand Louis Vuitton. Sharing the stage with the likes of Jayden Smith (an actual real-life human being who is also representing the brand) Lightning will premiere in a series of advertisements for the SERIES 4, Spring/Summer 2016 collection from LV. Some may write off using the likeness of video game heroine Lightning as not only unexpected but totally strange. However, Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière rationalizes otherwise:
“Lightning is the perfect avatar for a global, heroic woman... If we push the reflection about heroines, or what might constitute the nature of a woman whose actions can be so courageous that she becomes superior and iconic, it becomes obvious that a virtual entity integrates with the founding principles of the Maison.”
Lightning, Final Fantasy XIII Though Final Fantasy is no stranger to fashion, this collaboration of a popular video game franchise and high fashion is unprecedented.   Words by Kenneth Vu
