Meet the fashion label leading the rest in gender-fluid clothing

If you don’t know who Sofia Prantera or Fergus Purcell are yet, you might want to learn. Prantera and Purcell are the creators of the amazing unisex brand Aries. The cutting edge brand specializes in “gender-fluid clothing,” if you will ― menswear for women that seamlessly transitions to pieces men can also feel comfortable wearing. The label’s lookbook is filled with bold graphics, sheer tops, and great denim. The brand so successfully blends underground streetwear with tailored sophistication. Aries is not traditional, and neither are its founders. According to Vogue, Prantera and Purcell met while working for Slam City Skates in the nineties. The meeting was happenstance, but the pair are a match made in heaven. In an interview with Vogue, Purcell said, “I’m the streetwear trashy graphics thing, and Sofia is more from a high-fashion background. In reality, there is quite a crossover between our two aesthetics.” After Slam City the two went their separate ways, with Purcell creating his own skate store Palace, and even doing some work with Marc Jacobs. However, the two came back together in 2010 to begin the passion project that turned into Aries. Aries

Even though the brand is young, it has a distinct point of view. On the Aries website Prantera says this of the brand: “I had struggled with reconciling my love for fashion, beautifully made and cut clothes, and sartorial experimentation with the love for street wear, anti-fashion youth movements and trash culture in general so, as we sat writing our first manifesto, we decided that Aries should encompass all these elements.” Aries blends conflicting aesthetics to create something truly beautiful and unique. The Aries person is edgy, a little grunge, and pushes the boundaries on what’s considered appropriate for men and women. All of the Aries clothing is unisex, with the exception of the dresses. This gives the brand an ease and accessibility factor that most brands don’t have. In addition, it helps Aries stand out in an over-saturated fashion landscape where big name brands kind of crowd the market. When people have access to everything, you have to give them what they have never seen, and Aries certainly does that. Aries Aries     While addressing the unisex nature of the brand Prantera told I.D Magazine, “There's a sort of nonchalance about dressing like a man, or a comfortableness that there isn't in women’s wear. People are definitely going towards that look anyway. Hopefully in the near future people won't see it as two separate things.” She continues, “How much easier the world would be if there wasn't such a thing like, this is male, this is female?” My answer: a lot easier, and we can get there one smoking cat sweatshirt at a time.
