Kali Uchis, the 21-year-old Colombian singer/songwriter by way of Virgina, made waves back in November at Red Bull Sound Select: 30 Days in LA. Miss Uchis' pop-throwback persona and era-clashing digs are likely nods to the many sounds and styles of music heard on her debut EP Por Vida. Track by track, her voice is remiscnient of other pop songstresses with hints of Lykke Li, Yuna, Bianca and Rosie Casady of the darker CocoRosie, and at times, even Amy Winehouse. Uchis' bubbly, Lolita-esque pop vocals interweave with soulful jazzy skatting and stripped-down Spanish guitar, or heavily produced instrumentals featuring the work of Kaytranada, Alex Epton, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Tyler, the Creator, among others. The latter is said to have reached out to the singer shortly after her move to Los Angeles, leading to an artful affinity and partnership that would result in several songs heard on Por Vida. This is not Kali Uchis only instance of serving as another artist's muse, though. Upon Nick Knight's discovery of her "soulful music on Instagram, [he] quickly made ... Uchis' music the soundtrack to his photoshoots. For the Fall 2015 issue of V, Knight put Uchis before the lens, capturing her in fashion selected by Carri Munden. A performance of her haunting track 'Loner' was recorded on set to create a seductive, if melancholy, film."
